Elizabeth Kikkert MLA - Candidate for Ginninderra
Elizabeth Kikkert MLA
Elizabeth Kikkert migrated to Australia from Tonga with her family when she was 8 years old, knowing only two words of English: yes and no. She attended primary and high schools in Sydney. Growing up, Elizabeth was taught compassion from an early age by her single mother, which developed into a great passion for people.
Elizabeth and her family moved to Canberra in 2005, settling down in West Belconnen. She quickly established herself in the local community as a small businesswoman and an extensive volunteer worker. During this time, her family grew to five children.
Elizabeth has been actively engaged in charity and community work, especially concerning women, youth, and children. She firmly believes in the value of giving her time and energy to others, working to ensure that families, individuals, couples, and vulnerable people are able to nurture and achieve their aspirations.
With encouragement from her family, friends, and the community, Elizabeth successfully stood in the 2016 ACT Legislative Assembly election. She was then re-elected in the 2020 election, giving her almost eight years of valuable Assembly experience. Elizabeth is the first Pacific Islander parliamentarian in Australia and serves the ACT community as a local Member for Ginninderra.
During her time in the Assembly, Elizabeth has held shadow portfolios in Families, Youth and Community Services; Prevention of Domestic and Family Violence; Multicultural Affairs; Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs; Corrections; and Disability. She has also served on several committees, including as chair of the Standing Committee on Public Accounts; deputy chair of the Standing Committee on Education, Employment and Youth Affairs; and deputy chair of the Standing Committee on Health, Ageing and Community Services.
In her free time, Elizabeth continues to enjoy volunteering and staying active with her family. She remains passionate about supporting families and individuals and strengthening the community.
With much work still to be done, Elizabeth hopes to be able to continue to represent the people of the Ginninderra Electorate and will be standing again in the 2024 ACT Legislative Assembly election.
